RESCUED BY NELA’s OUTREACH WORKER: O.O. the second daughter in her family was born in a very sick condition. Now eleven years old, she has been in and out of hospitals several times. Her persistent sickly condition, coupled with the fact that both parents started experiencing very depressive sickly conditions just after her birth, attracted the curiosity of the other family members, who out of ignorance attributed this trend to witch craft.
Thus, O.O was accused of using her witchcraft to cause sickness in the family In order to drained their resources and bring them to penury. Eventually, she lost both parents at a tender age of three (3). The wrath of the family members descended on her, she was exposed to terrible inhuman treatment and diabolic visits to shrines and spiritual churches to compel her to confess of her supposedly witchcraft spirit. When all these couldn’t yield any result she was abandoned by the family to the care of the maternal grandmother who out of her meagre income took over the responsibility of the girl.
After being subjected to this inhuman treatment for almost 7 years, she finally broke down, about to give up, when one of our outreach workers located her and reported her case to the organization. We then took over her case, put her on admission and after some preliminary investigations she was discovered to be HIV Positive. She stayed in the hospital for almost a week until she got stabilized. We then took her to a teaching hospital (UCH) in Ibadan which is almost 250 km from our base of operation since our state doesn’t have the requisite facilities. After examination, the consultant Dr. Brown requested that she be put on admission for about 3 months for proper and intensive investigations to be carried out. The cost estimate given to the organization was 70,000.00 Naira. We hurriedly embarked on a campaign to raised funds to foot the bill since the organization couldn’t meet up. In the process a stakeholder in the community who also is a bank manager volunteered to foot the whole bill, which he did eventually. O.O is back now on ARV and is doing very well. The organisation seized the opportunity to educate the grand mother and other interested family members about HIV/AIDS and letting know that O.O is not a witch and that she could have contacted the virus from the parents.

“NELA’s success story”
Hope restored for KDJ
I am KDJ (not real name) a programme assistant with NELA, and aged 30 years. Living with HIV had been a major challenge before I came in contact with NELA. I was diagnosed of TB and referred for HIV screening which came out positive. I was abandoned by relatives and friends including my fiancée. With no means of income and deteriorating health, life seemed hopeless and meaningless. Coming in contact with NELA changed my fortune. The post-test counselling, care and support received from NELA helped improve my health and psychological well-being. I changed from a fragile looking, thin individual to a robust, plump looking and healthy person. I became more positive and enthusiastic with life. This new identity culminated in the successful completion of my Higher National Diploma in Business Administration. An icing on the cake was still in the offing for me. I applied for an advertised post at NELA and was employed as a programme officer by the organization. A position in which I have continued to serve. NELA has been very supportive and have developed my capacity in many areas of HIV/AIDS programming. A further testament to my developed capacity was assuming a new role as the coordinator of NELA’s peer support group for PLWHAs. People I come across never believe my status. A king once joked about taking me as his new “Olori” (King’s wife) obviously due to my appearance. Such is the extent to which my fortune has changed. And wait for this…..I am married with a bouncing baby boy. My child is negative courtesy NELA’s PMTCT programme. How better can things get? I will always remain grateful to God and NELA for the wonderful role played in my life. Health restored, education completed, job secured, got married with a child. How better can things get? I have since become committed to ensuring that people do not become infected with HIV and that those infected continue to live positively. I am geared up to advocate and be involved in fighting the war against HIV/AIDS.

“Network on Ethics, Law, HIV/AIDS (NELA)”
The 1000 USD would be spent by NELA to alleviate the impact of HIV on members of NELA Support Group of People living with HIV. Based on the needs participatory assessment of the support group members, the group assessed to be in greater needs are the children living with HIV and/or orphaned by it. Also based on the priority needs, assessment of this group, some of the money would be spent in buying drugs to treat opportunistic infections that frequently occur in them and part will be utilized to support them nutritionally.
